Imaging methods are particularly important for their ability to perform diagnoses and transition to appropriate treatment planning. One of the methods used is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), where physicians prefer devices that are user-friendly and have strong magnetic fields.

If the imaging device used is a 3 Tesla MRI, signals from tissues can be collected appropriately. Since the device collects data from 64 channels, it is particularly important in brain and musculoskeletal diseases thanks to its faster data collection compared to other MRI devices, allowing the obtained data to be examined in a short time and converted into high-resolution images.

The MRI device is located in a specially equipped room with a cylindrical tube structure with open ends, containing a very strong magnet. Since the highest quality image is obtained at the center of the magnet, the part of the body being examined must be in the tube. For the image to be clear and high quality, it is important for the patient to remain still during the imaging.

MRI allows for the examination of almost all parts of the body, and the images obtained through special computers and software provide significant information in diagnosing diseases, planning treatment, and evaluating the effectiveness of previous treatments.

Since ionizing radiation (X-rays) is not used, it is a prominent imaging method in diseases that require frequent imaging. The process takes about 15-90 minutes depending on the size of the area being imaged.

This technique stands out especially in the field of neuroradiology. Using the arterial spin labeling method, brain hemorrhages can be detected by MRI, which is performed without administering a contrast agent. It is a useful technique for pediatric patients as there is no need for contrast materials.

Since it is possible to increase resolution, there is an increased chance of seeing very small cartilaginous, bony, and tendon lesions in the musculoskeletal system. Neuro MRI exams can be performed successfully.

Main Uses of 3 Tesla MRI:

  • Bones, joints, tendons, and ligaments
  • Liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen, pancreas, and adrenal glands
  • Breast
  • Uterus and ovaries
  • Prostate gland
  • Blood vessels
  • Lymph nodes

Features of 3 Tesla MRI

Many diseases can be examined using the 3 Tesla MRI. The features of the device include:

  • Many patients cannot undergo MRI due to claustrophobia and prefer open MRI. The 3 Tesla MRI allows overweight patients to enter the device.
  • Patients can listen to music or watch videos if they wish during the imaging.
  • It can be used in the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of brain diseases, particularly in neuroradiology.
  • Magnetic resonance spectroscopy can be performed using the 3 Tesla MRI.
  • Due to the possibility of increasing resolution, small cartilaginous and tendon lesions in the musculoskeletal system can be seen. Neuro MRI can be performed.
  • Examinations including cardiac perfusion, which shows blood supply to the tissue or area being examined by administering a contrast agent, can be performed.
  • Using the arterial spin labeling method, information about blood supply in the brain can be obtained by performing MRI perfusion without administering contrast agents, especially in children.
  • In contrast-enhanced and non-contrast-enhanced MR angiography, the 3 Tesla MRI has unique advantages.
  • The use of this device in imaging has become widespread.
  • Since it suppresses fats, it provides information about liver imaging.
  • High signal strength allows for the detection of small lesions in breast MRI exams.

How is 3 Tesla MRI Performed?

Before the procedure, the patient should not have any metal such as necklaces, earrings, watches, or rings. The team asks the patient to remove all metals first. The patient is placed on the imaging device, and the team explains to the patient the position of the bed according to the area to be imaged.

The patient hears and follows necessary instructions during the procedure through headphones placed on their ears. The headphones also help the patient to be less affected by the sound of the device. In the patient’s hand, there is a button to quickly contact the team in case of any problems.

The imaging time varies depending on the area to be imaged and the type of disease.

Body Parts Examined with 3 Tesla MRI

It can be used for imaging organs in different parts of the body. Neurological disorders such as brain tumors, epilepsy, migraines, eye disorders, ear disorders, jaw problems, spinal diseases, shoulder and knee issues, as well as joint and ligament imaging, can be used to detect many bone-related problems and coronary vessel imaging that nourishes the heart.

How to Prepare for 3 Tesla MRI Imaging

Ask your doctor who requested the MRI to explain why this examination is needed, its potential risks, and any questions that arouse your curiosity. Before most MRI examinations, you can drink water and take any medications you are using. You will be informed in advance if necessary. When coming to your appointment, choose comfortable clothing without metal zippers, hooks, or buttons.

You may need to undress for the imaging and wear a disposable gown suitable for this purpose. Do not keep items such as mobile phones, jewelry, watches, coins, keys, dental prostheses, or glasses.

If you have devices with metal like a pacemaker, insulin pump, hearing aid, or intrauterine device (IUD), you cannot be taken into the imaging room. The team will inform you of this in advance.

Due to the imaging technique, you may hear loud noises while inside the device. Ear protectors can be used to prevent this, and you can be provided with music to listen to that will relax you.

Inform your doctor in advance if you have any health issues like kidney, liver, or allergies. If you have kidney failure or allergies, you cannot be given contrast injections even if your doctor wants it.

Although no harmful effects on the fetus have been reported, MRI should be avoided if you are pregnant, especially during the first trimester, unless necessary.
